Northern Europe

Northern Europe is defined by the volcanic islands of Iceland and Jan Mayen in the far northwest, the western seaboard extending from Great Britain and Ireland to the mountains of Scandinavia and the large eastern plain around the countries of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Finland.

The whole of Northern Europe is affected by the Gulf Stream which has a tempering influence on the climate which varies from maritime and maritime subarctic in the west, subarctic or Arctic in the north and subarctic or temperate and continental in the east.

Vegetation ranges from sparse tundra in the north to temperate broadleaf forests in the south, west and east.
