Nutrition & undernourishment

Malnutrition and food shortages take a pervasive toll in developing countries, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. Malnutrition weakens immune systems and reduces resistance to disease and so is implicated in over half of all child deaths worldwide.

Undernourishment and extreme poverty often go hand in hand, causing tremendous human suffering and costing countries billions of pounds through lost productivity. Meeting the growing demand for food is a major challenge for many countries, involving not only direct issues relating to agriculture but also implications for transport, trade and politics.
